Course of Therapy: Quitting Porn in Three Steps

Phase 1: Consciousness — Understanding What's Going on

In the first phase of my approach, the focus is on developing greater awareness of the dynamics underlying your porn consumption. When you decide to consume porn — how are you feeling in that moment? What are you feeling and thinking? What happened beforehand? And how do you feel afterward? Many men already have a vague awareness of these patterns. In our work together, I support you in sharpening this awareness — seeing it more clearly and sensing it more fully in your body as well. Often, this phase takes only one or two sessions.

Phase 2: Alternatives — Developing New Possibilities

Even if it has negative consequences, your porn consumption serves a purpose. Otherwise, you would not keep returning to it. I am convinced that, consciously or unconsciously, you expect some kind of positive effect from it. Perhaps porn consumption functions as a way to regulate frustration and stress, or to experience more aliveness, sensuality, or strength.

In Phase 2, the goal is to become clearly aware of this underlying purpose — and then to develop new strategies for meeting your needs in different ways. In ways that genuinely contribute to greater aliveness, energy, and self-respect. Because only when you have clear alternatives to old, unwanted behavior do you experience more freedom. Only then does acting differently become truly possible. Initially, Phase 2 also typically lasts one or two sessions.

Phase 3: Integration — Walking the Talk

At this stage, the focus shifts toward actually living these new insights and possibilities. Longstanding habits such as porn consumption often become deeply ingrained and highly automatic. Even with a high degree of understanding and awareness, the old patterns will probably continue at first. This phase is therefore about setting realistic intermediate goals. Together, we develop and test strategies that help you interrupt old behavioral patterns and respond differently to familiar impulses. Because only then does the possibility arise for genuinely integrating new solutions.

We also develop a different understanding of change processes: if you do end up watching porn again, despite intending otherwise, this is not a failure. It is valuable feedback that allows us to make adjustments. We then move once more through Phases 1 and 2 — this time with additional depth and creativity. How long Phase 3 lasts depends on many individual factors. The goal is that, over time, you learn to move through these phases more independently yourself, making increasingly subtle adjustments along the way.
